My Students

Can you imagine not being able to communicate with your teachers or friends? Three of the students in my classroom are not able to communicate verbally and really need a computer that they can take with them to classes to allow them to communicate.

I teach students with severe and profound disabilities, at a public high school.

Several of the students in my classroom are not able to communicate using their voices. These students rely on using their eyes to communicate. This makes it difficult to communicate with peers and teachers. The students in my special education program are integrated into general education classes throughout the day with their peers. We also bring in peers throughout the day to work with the students in the classroom. The students in the high school have a great respect for students with special needs. This program will provide the students in my classroom and their peers with the opportunity to learn about and respect each other.

My Project

Having a computer that the students can use for communication will open up a whole new world of education for them. We will be using programs including Boardmaker and Clicker 5 to help the students communicate. These programs allow the students to use a button connected to a computer to help them make choices. The student listens to choices from the computer, and when they hear the choice they would like to select, they hit the button. The students will be able to answer questions and make choices using these programs! The program will also allow the students to speak to their friends. It is very important for the students with special needs to build relationships with peers. These programs will allow the students to talk to their friends about their weekend plans, things they like and things they don't. It will allow them to have a conversation with their peers.

You will be giving the students in my classroom the ability to have a voice for the first time.

They will be able to make choices, show their learning and have conversations with peers and teachers.
