A Recipe for Reading: Combine Three Cups of Tea + Wildcats

My students need 30 copies of Three Cups of Tea in order to encourage reading among 9-12 graders in an after-school literature circle sponsored by the Library Club.

My Students

It has been said that Reading is a window to the world. My students have rarely left their home state much less travel the world. Come and join us as we open the windows for them to see what the world has to offer them and more importantly what they have to offer to the world.

My students live in a small rural community in the Mississippi Delta.

My students are eager to learn and explore new places; however, our resources are very limited. My students primarily come from low income families. Approximately 63% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. Our school library is unable to provide groups of students with materials to read together and discuss in order to promote literacy. Our budget is very limited.

My Project

I am asking for 30 copies of the book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. Three Cups of Tea tells an astonishing story of a man who failed to climb K-2, but finds himself in an impoverished Pakistan village where he promises to return and build a school. Students will read this book independently and then meet together in small groups with myself and other teachers to discuss. Through this project I hope to bring students together to explore places and people around the world. I would like for them to understand other cultures and the lives that others live in order to hopefully better understand their own. My students seem to have very little pride in themselves or their community. Often when one tries to change and make a difference they become easily discouraged and are left with a feeling of hopelessness. I would like for them to see that one person can make a difference.

By providing students with the opportunity to read, I feel we are opening up a whole new world for them to explore.

Through this exploration they can learn how to overcome obstacles and challenges they may face to improve their lives one at a time. In turn this can only improve our world one community at a time. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn. Through reading that window to the world is opened and the possibilities for their future are endless.
