This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They are disappearing from major cities across our great nation at an alarming rate. What once taught us to read, write and laugh is becoming obsolete: Newspapers.

I teach nine and ten year old students in an economically depressed city in the state of Texas, ten miles from the border of Mexico and next to one of the deadliest cities in the world.

Fortunately, my school and neighborhood are located in a middle class area of town where I interact daily with my students at grocery stores, the local park and restaurants. Many of the students in my town never make it to college and those that do, are normally the first in their family to do so. I enjoy teaching my students to read the newspaper and to research what they learn from the various sections of the paper. We travel around the world by reading our newspaper and our journey takes us sometimes to far away places most of them have never heard of. We read the current events, political issues, local stories and of course the sports (which the boys love). We also edit the paper for mistakes and discuss how to correct what they have found to be wrong. It is a great learning tool.

My Project

I feel that by having a color printer, my students will be able to experience the joy of printing their own school newspaper. My students can take ownership and pride in knowing they have successfully completed a project. They will be able to hold in their hands a newspaper that will hopefully encourage them to research, read and write correctly. In this day of text messaging, my students need a diversion from the simple texting that is ruining their language and spelling skills and have them read and write using correct grammar and spelling. As a former editor of my college newspaper, I want to pass on my skills to my students in an effort to make them realize how important proper communication skills are. They need to realize that writing is a form of art that is necessary to succeed in life.

I ask for your support in helping my kids.

I truly believe your support will change the way my students see themselves. To see your name with a published piece of work, a photo credit or your layout design will give my kids the confidence to tackle any project that may come their way. In order to make successful students, we must first teach them to be inquisitive, think outside of the box and show they can communicate. With your gift of a laser printer, they can do just that. I thank you...
