Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is in an old building and has a light-colored tile floor. The paint job is drab; the desks are mismatched and the file cabinets are covered in old contact paper. It is not an inviting learning environment.

My students are in a special education class due to having a disability such as mental retardation, emotional disturbance, learning disability, autism, or a health impairment.

The students are mostly Hispanic, and the majority come from homes where English is not the primary language. Our school is a Title 1 school because a large percentage of the children receive free or reduced lunch. They face an uphill battle to graduate from high school. However, the students are still young and want to learn. They are sweet and polite and eager to please.

My Project

I am requesting a calendar carpet and a hopscotch carpet for our room. The colorful carpets will brighten the room and give it a more inviting atmosphere. Practically speaking, it will help the room stay warmer during the cold winter months. Educationally speaking, there are many learning activities for which the carpets can be used. The calendar carpet can be used to teach addition, multiplication, arrays, graphs, grids, and place value. It can also be used to practice sight words, phonics, and sequencing. Doing these activities on a large carpet will get the students moving; research has shown that students learn better and retain more when movement is involved. Likewise, the hopscotch carpet can not only be used for number recognition, but also for skip counting, multiplication, spelling practice, and numerous other activities.

By providing these carpets for my classroom, you will brighten the future for these children.

The room will be a more inviting and happy place to be. They will be motivated by the movement activities, and encouraged when they have mastered the skills they must learn. If they enjoy learning and are successful, then they will stick with it and stay in school. With a good education they will grow to be successful and productive adults.
