My Students

Can you imagine your favorite children's book being read to you as a child? Does someone special remember having to reread that book to you over and over? I want my students to have that special memory with classic children's literature too!

My learners are public school students in one of Michigan's largest urban districts attending a school that provides gifted students challenging curriculum in their age-appropriate grade level.

My students are five and six year old accelerated Kindergartners who are entering my classroom with gifted abilities. They are already readers! My students are thirsty for knowledge and are continually practicing decoding, fluency, phrasing and comprehension skills through their reading.

My Project

By providing an organized listening center that is stocked with classic children's stories, my students will have a fantastic memory of their favorite book. Not only will I be able to introduce a particular book to them in large group time, but then I will be given the freedom to provide their favorite story over and over again in a center. This center will give the children the opportunity to "hook up" to a good book. Here they will practice comprehension skills, listening skills, decoding, phrasing, and fluency. New sets of books on CD, headphones, and a CD player will greatly enrich my students' ability to practice these essential reading skills in a space-saving and organized setting.

"Hooking Up" to a good book is so vital where I teach.

For children that have limited reading resources in their homes, hearing a good book at school may be the only opportunity they have to connect with a text. Your donation to this project will greatly enrich my students' curriculum and help to create life-long readers. Please help my students form that unforgettable memory of a favorite character or magical far-away place - just like you!
