My Students

My students are so excited to be given the opportunity to discuss religion at school, a subject that is often considered taboo. I am seeking resources to make this a great experience for them.

This will be the first year this course is offered in our school district, despite the fact that the class was approved many years ago.

More students selected this course as a social studies elective than any other elective they could have chosen from. I was so excited about this, but because of our schedule, only 35 students each semester will get the chance to take the course. So, they will understand from the beginning that they will need to work hard. My overall goal for the course is to make them more informed citizens.

My Project

The books I am requesting are illustrated companions to the books we will be reading as our textbooks this semester. The visual component that this book supplies will help my students to understand the culture and traditions of those who are not like them. Most of my students identify as Christian. However, the research I have done this summer has proved that most probably don't even know that much about their own religion. I am looking forward to providing a lot of supplemental resources to the students and I hope that this is one of those resources.

My students grow up in a pretty sheltered environment.

There is not much diversity in our school. I want my students to understand the culture and traditions of those who don't share the same background as theirs. I want them to be able to have intelligent conversations with those of other faiths. Most importantly, I want them to be informed voters and citizens.
