My Students

Many of my students have little or no experience reading anything other than a standard Bible. Reading from other sacred texts will help them to understand the world around them better and help them function better in our ever-changing world.

I teach in a large school district in Oregon.

I have succeeded in getting a new course approved, World Religions, and more students signed up for this social studies course than any other elective offered in our department. Religion has wrongly become a taboo subject in our schools. My students are excited to learn about not only about their own religion but also the other religions of the world. These students will be motivated to learn -- there is a huge demand for the course, but few slots available, so they know they have to work hard to keep their spot in the course.

My Project

My students need 34 copies of the book, "The World's Wisdom," by Philip Novak, to support their learning in a new World Religions' class. Being able to read the actual words that are considered sacred by the religions they are studying, students are more likely to understand why the religion is important to its followers. Considering that most of my students identify as Christians, and with the exceedingly important role that religion plays in our everyday lives, it is important that students understand those who are different from themselves. They are so excited to take the course, and I am trying to get them the resources we need to make it the best course possible.

This course will open up the world to my students.

They will see beyond our town and understand better their fellow citizens. I hope it will make them better people and more informed voters in the future.
