My Students

Did you have a diary or journal when you were younger? How fun is it to look back at your entries to see what your thoughts were in your younger years?

Although technology is the way of life for my 8th grade students, I would like them to go old school with their work.

Each day in class, I would like to begin or end with journal writing. Not only will this writing help them reflect on their work, it will also push their thinking to new levels. Writing in Social Studies will push their creativity and further their problem-solving skills, preparing them more for the future. My 8th graders may come from high poverty homes, but that does not mean that fact determines their future.

My Project

Markers and journal prompts would push my students' creativity to write, draw, and dream each day in Social Studies. With various topics for their daily writing, I hope that they will become more well rounded and open to new ideas. I want to expose their minds and eyes to various people, opinions, and ways of thinking.

With testing, there is so much emphasis on test preparation, but I am choosing to focus on both test preparation, while helping nurture a well rounded, young adult with the use of journal prompts and markers.

Their writing and opportunity to be creative and problem solve may just change the way they look at their future.
