This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was the first word you wrote and read? Your name right. Sight words are very important because it helps students read and write. I am constantly coming up with new ways to teach my students their words. It is not what you teach the students, it is how you teach them.

I teach kindergarten in a NYC Public School.

Most of my students are English Language Learners. They come into kindergarten not knowing a word of English and by the time they leave they are reading and writing sentences. They learn this because I place a strong emphasis on them learning their sight words. Each week for homework they get new sight words. These words then go on a Word Wall in the classroom. Through out the week and the year the class is learning these words. I am constantly trying to make it more fun and exciting for them. They love to play bingo and create words with play dough. We even have timed races to see if we can say all the words before the timer rings. Then I thought, I am the one conducting these activities. It would be great if the students can take control of there learning by having these activities in the form of centers.

My Project

These materials will help students learn their sight words. In fact they will be taking control of their learning. For example, with the Tubs of Sight Words the students will be saying, searching, and writing the sight word on the activity card. With the Beat the Clock Board the students will be trying to say as many sight words before the timer goes off. With the Sight Word Practice Center they will be teaching each other the words and playing teacher. With the Magnetic Word Building Board they will be creating sight words in a cool way by searching for the letters in that word. With the Sight Word Memory Match Game they will play memory and try to find the matching word pairs. With the Turn and Learn Mobile Chart Stand, all of the sight word charts, stories with sight words and the Pocket Chart with the Memory Cards will all be kept in one place. With the word spacers they will be able to space their words in sentences out, after all they know the words to write them.

Knowing sight words helps students soar into reading and writing.

Yes they are instances when I have students who come in not knowing how to write or recognize their name. By the time the leave they have been exposed to so many sight word materials and activities that they are writing simple stories. Reading and writing is a great gift, how you teach the sight words to get the students there is what remains with them forever.
