My Students

Very rarely do we step back and ask, "where is our society going?" I ask this to my students often and the answers sometimes discourage me. My students are unconvinced society can change for the better, and even more: they feel helpless to aid in its change. Understanding it will be the first step.

My students are 17 to 18 years old and about to follow one of two paths: working full time or going to college.

My desire is that they all would go to college. However, in a school where 50% of students are consider "at risk", where many help support their family by working, and many do not consider college a viable option, college is not always possible. One thing statistics show us is that education in college is crucial for decreasing prejudice (racial, gender, age, etc.). My classes are very diverse with 50% of students being Hispanic, 20% African American, 20% Anglo, and 10% Asian.

My Project

The sociology books we need you to help us purchase will be the education some students have never, and will never have. They will help my students erase prejudice and ignorance, and teach them to be optimistic about society and those comprising it. I want to encourage the students attending college to grow and change, but I want even more for those students that cannot go to college to receive an education in society that will aid them in their worldview for the rest of their lives.

This is important because you are buying a class set of books that will be used not just this year, but many years to come.

I teach around 120 students each trimester. That means 360 students a year. In three years, the books you purchase will have helped over 1,000 students change their perspective on our society and challenge them to be better citizens, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, etc. Now imagine the lives they will change with the ideas they learn from these books. This IS important!
