My Students

The current textbooks suggested by our district's curriculum is incredibly intimidating to the children as well as outdated. Many of the kids have a tough time relating to the material and seem disinterested in utilizing their textbooks.

These are 5th grade students in suburban D.C., and our standardized reading test scores have lagged the past couple of years.

The majority of our students receive Free or Reduced Meals. These children are so used to have Reading & Math be the focus of their early education that they've been missing out on the science and social studies. These latter 2 subjects are often not introduced until 3rd - 4th grade years, which many times, is simply too late.

My Project

My students need 80 Time for Kids subscriptions for weekly current events in science & social studies lessons and also to enhance the curriculum in these subjects. Time for Kids is great because the stories & articles all hit on curriculum standards. For example, global warming read in the textbook may be difficult to understand and comprehend; however, an article about polar bears being protected by the U.S. gov.'t in Time for Kids might really bring home the point on global warming, or replace the text altogether for this lesson. Students can bring these home (whereas they really don't want to lug that big science text home!) and back to school to complete homework assignments and prepare current event reports and summaries.

The biggest thing in getting our students' reading scores and improving their skills is getting them INTERESTED in the world around them.

This can be achieved by relating subject matter to their lives through vibrant pictures, piquing curiosity through engaging titles, and simplifying stories through charts and tables. The absolute best part about it is having our kids informed about current events - TFK does this in a relevant and timely manner.
