Organizing Young Readers

My students need a storage caddy to organize their independent reading materials, reading, and writing journals.

My Students

Imagine being six and trying to manage all of your materials WITHOUT A DESK! Yes, my multiage classroom uses tables, which encourages sharing and cooperation, but makes the storage of personal materials a challenge. My kids have books and personal response journals to which they need easy access.

My multiage classroom is made up of 21 students.

This year, ten are in first grade, 11 are second graders. I try very hard to teach my kids strategies for organization which will impact their future success in school and in life. The other classrooms in my school have cubbies which helps kiddos keep their materials neatly at hand, but I have struggled to come up with a plan that is user friendly. I am finally relenting and begging your help for cubbies and storage bins.

My Project

Right now, my students have been using upright magazine bins (like at the library) to store their leveled texts (everyone is reading at a different level and keeps books that are just right for them in their bin). What I find is that the books catch on the edges of the bins, tearing the covers, OR the bins tip over. In addition, the kids store their reading response and writing journals in these bins. At one point last year, one of my students told me (after her bin tipped over noisily in the middle of reading), "Mrs. ____, we need to come up with a better system for all of our stuff." I couldn't agree more! If we are given this gift, my kids will have an organized place to keep their personal belongings; I will teach them to keep it tidy.

Donations to this request will make a tremendous difference to my children.

Organization is a key issue with young children; if they don't learn it early some never learn it at all. Help us! Please!
