Current Events: Bringing The World Into Focus For Refugees

My students need current events magazines at varying language levels to stay abreast of world events.

My Students

My students are the world. They come from dozens of different countries as refugees with little more than the clothes and mementos they took on the plane. Having access to magazines that tell more about world events will prompt discussions and learning among them.

My students are refugees and immigrants from across the globe.

They hail from Rwanda, Burma, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Cuba, and Congo to name but a few. They attend an inner-city public school in New York State with few resources. They are eager to learn more about each other and to share their own personal experiences. They are worldly in the sense that they have been greatly affected by war and have traveled to other places to avoid further conflict. Reading about current events would bring much to their current knowledge base. They need, however, materials at their own reading ability since they are learning English as a second, third, or fourth language.

My Project

Refugees all have a story to tell. They often know more about world events that do not make US newspapers. However, as refugees, these students are often isolated from other current events affecting the world. They are eager to share their own story and to learn more about other situations facing different countries. They make connections and broaden their horizons. But, these students are also learning English, some for the very first time. They need access to current events magazines that are at their reading level so as to not frustrate them. We will use Time for Kids and Weekly Reader to learn vocabulary, enhance reading comprehension, and discuss and debate the ideas found within. My students will be very appreciative of these resources.

These magazines will spark discussion and debate, enhance reading comprehension and vocabulary.

They will be able to participate in the greater discourse that takes place in English feeling knowledgeable and confident in their facts and language use. The students will learn to count on an incoming source of current events magazines to stay abreast of world happenings.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
