Let's Get Our Hands Dirty! Understanding the soils of NC.

My students need a plastic bin set-up and various types of soils.

My Students

When you were a child, did you ever play in the dirt? I know I did! My brothers and I spent 2 years hand digging a 16 foot deep hole through red clay (and loved every minute of it!) Through this type of play I learned about various soil types. I want my students enjoy the same type of experience.

I teach middle and high school students with visual impairments at a residential school for the blind.

I teach all levels of science grades 3-12. The students live here during the week, and return home on weekends. My students come from all areas. Most of our students have never played in the dirt, and most are uncomfortable with the idea. I want them to understand basic soil types are well as soil mixes that are found in their "corner of the world" as well as other areas of our very diverse state.

My Project

I want to use the 12 bin organizer to set up a simple hands-on soil types demonstration. In some of the bins, I will have only one type of soil. I am asking for clay, different textures of sand, topsoil (planting soil), and gravel. In other bins, I will mix soils to demonstrate various areas of North Carolina, from the gravelly soils of the mountains, through the loamy clays of the piedmont, to the sandy loam of the coastal plain. The bins will make it easy for the students to interact with the soils without thinking that they are being "dirty". In addition, the plastic bins will be very easy to label with both print and Braille, which will help the students to be able to use the bins without one-on-one instruction. Understanding soils is important for many reasons. Soil types are part of the NC Standard Course of Study for 6th grade and for Earth/Environmental Science. However, these soils can also be used to demonstrate the removal of pollution from water, an 8th grade topic.

In this day and time, many students have little opportunity to interact with the natural world.

They have been taught that soil is "dirty" and should not be touched. Blind students, especially, have been kept away from the earth by (well meaning) parents. This simple classroom set up with help these students gain a real understanding of the various soil types found in our state, and why they are important.
