This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is a limit to what you can do with only food coloring and water. Our students have reached that limit and science class needs balances to move beyond food coloring.

Our school is a small middle school- only 6th and 7th grade- that is public and open to any student.

We serve 97% Title I students in Arizona, 20% of which are Title I. These students all made a choice to attend our school- some for the emphasis on advanced work, some for the chance to be in a safe environment free from teasing and fights, and many so that they can be the first in their family to attend college.

My Project

With the purchase of triple beam balances our students will be able to engage in science experiments where precise calculations can occur. We do not have a lab, but a classroom can become a lab with a little creativity and a few materials. Triple beam balances will also allow us to teach at a college preparatory level- we will have students determine mass of an object and compare it to others. We will conduct experiments on whether an object has more density or less when added to another substance (and then determine why). We will be able to test hypotheses and conclusively determine their validity.

This project is important so that students who made a choice to go to a smaller, safer, college preparatory school will have the chance to really experience science.

It is one thing to predict, or watch a video, but to really see that a "rock" the size of their head can weigh less than a "rock" the size of a baseball will actually cement the lesson and the idea of mass into their brain. Young scientists will be born, and a triple beam balance is a small step to take.
