Printing Efficiency Makes the News

My students need an in-class printer to print drafts of their articles and of the newspaper layout.

My Students

I restarted the student newspaper last year and got a couple of issues out. I would like to do more this year, but I noticed that not having a printer in class is a problem. I can't leave the classroom to pick up the printouts we need to edit and this slows down the production of the class a lot.

I am teaching Journalism a very diverse student body with a mix of African-American, Hispanic, Hmong and Somali students.

Many of the students have only been moderately successful in school. I see Journalism as a gateway for them to have more success in school. I love teaching Journalism because it is "practical writing" that gets the students involved with the school and the community. It gets them thinking about issues impacting the whole community. Also, a student actually wants to learn good writing and editing if they know that many other people will be reading their writing.

My Project

We need an in-class printer to print drafts of their articles and of the newspaper layout. Asking for a printer may seem uncreative, but I can't over-state how frustrating it is not to be able to print layout and article drafts in my classroom. Further, it would be very helpful to be able to print out background materials for articles for the student to take home, or student schedules (to find for interviews), or photos to write captions for -- all of these small tasks contribute to the work environment of producing a newspaper. The resources in my school for an "extra" printer are very limited and I won't be getting one soon. To get a little more philosophical, I am dealing with students who have been deferred in many ways throughout their schooling. Being able to respond quickly to their ideas, being able to put something immediately into their hands, being able to edit something, to make those changes, and to give the new draft to the students to take home is very effective to keep the students focused.

Getting young people of color interested in the news, and in writing the news, is a challenge in itself.

Can the students learn journalism without this printer? Sure. But the printer will make it more likely that they will students will feel happy with and feel successful with their work. When we are dealing with students who are on the margins, like the students I am teaching, any small advantage is important.
