Calamities in Clay

My students need clay to mold and fire into intriguing 'calamity' characters and glaze to paint their projects.

My Students

Who didn't love the feel of making mudpies as a child? I remember the texture and smell so well of squishy mud that oozed through my fingers as my sister and I created culinary creations to "eat". I want my tactile-deprived students to experience this!

Many of my students have spent their formative years parked in front of a TV or computer or in a clean sterile daycare and not permitted to use their hands to create something.

I want to reverse this process and let kids experience the happiness you feel when you actually make something that you can pick up, turn around and touch! So many of these kids are sensory deprived that this project should help ease them on their way to seeing that the world can be experienced by using your own brain to create something instead of having someone else do it with their ideas.

My Project

And create they will! With this project, each child will have enough clay to produce a clay animal that is in some way a real "calamity": perhaps their animal grew two heads, perhaps it is a frog that has a tongue that is too big to catch flies, maybe their animal has such a big belly it can't get propelled into movement. A discussion will proceed this project about how to brainstorm ideas, sketch out the idea and whether the creation can be supported in the clay environment. Also, to tie into science, we will discuss how the animal's survival would be affected by such an anomaly. Just because we are in art class, does not mean that other subjects can't be incorporated.

I dearly love my students and want to see them go on in life to have many experiences, large and small---the whole gamut of life.

So many of the kids in this area are deprived of basic social experiences and stunningly, some have never even been away from our town. My wish is to add to their joy in life with this fun project that makes you think.
