My Students

My students find accounting to be both challenging and rewarding. I tell my students that when they have completed this course, they will be able to take a job in bookkeeping. Being able to teach them to use a ten key calculator would only enhance their basic business skills.

My students are from a rural part of the country and many families are still trying to bounce back after Katrina.

My students attend a large county school and it takes the average student 30 minutes to travel one way to school. My accounting students are juniors and seniors in high school and while most believe they are college bound, the reality of it is the majority will enter the work force immediately upon graduation and will be lucky to complete an associates degree at a local junior college. My students are driven to do better and some are the first to graduate in their family and many are the first to attend college.

My Project

Although a number of my students are college bound, I do have several that will not go on to college due to lack of funds. These students will enter the work force upon graduation and my job is to arm these students with as many basic job skills as possible. By students being able to use a ten key calculator accurately and efficiently will only enhance their chances of landing a good entry level job such as a bank teller or accounting clerk. The ten-key calculators will be used by the students when they are adding columns. This enable them to complete assignments in a more timely manner and hopefully allow the class as a whole to progress through more chapters than usual.

Due to budget constraints, my class size is steadily increasing.

As my numbers go up, it is next to impossible to ensure current students get the same level of learning as those in the past. By having the ten-key calculators, it will expedite practice activities which well enable more material to be taught. In addition, it will teach a business skill to many whom would otherwise not possess it, possibly giving them an edge when competing for a job.
