My Students

Many of my students are limited in their real world experiences as we live in a high risk/low income district. We are a small town without many opportunities and experiences available. Because it is not always possible to go on field trips, I would like to bring objects and items into the classroom.

Like many schools in Michigan, our school district is cutting costs where ever possible.

Outside of the classroom, many students and their families can not afford to visit museums or cultural events. My hope is to open new worlds and ideas to my students through artifacts, pictures, and literature. Having the document camera would provide the opportunity for all students to see clearly what I am sharing without the cost to the district of making multiple copies. Also, many of the items that I can share are borrowed and valuable so having the document camera would eliminate possible breaking or damaging these items. I can see this as a great opportunity for my students to learn and get excited about things that they otherwise might not have access to.

My Project

In Social Studies, we are learning about Ancient History in the Eastern Hemisphere. Ancient calendars, ancient writings, and pictures could be shared using the document camera. Resource materials, including National Geographic pictures and articles, could be shared and available for all students to see. Students could even bring items from home to share with the class. In Language Arts class, the possibilities are endless. Literature, poems, news articles, and samples of student work could be shown and discussed. As a teaching tool, I see even more uses such as: editing sentences and paragraphs, going over grammar examples, and writing class stories! It is very exciting to think of how our learning will be enhanced.

I believe that having this teaching tool available in the classroom will give my students the same advantage that students in high-end school districts have.

It is my job to provide the best learning experiences that I possible can, and I feel that a document camera will help me to do that.
