How Did They Do That?: A Lesson in DNA Fingerprinting

My students need DNA manipulatives to help them understand how DNA is extracted and replicated.

My Students

DNA is all too often a topic covered in books or videos. Having kits to allow my students to manipulate DNA and DNA models will add immensely to their Biology II experience.

Our high school is a rural school in a high poverty area in Louisiana.

We have little money for lab materials. The students in Biology II are seniors who plan to go to college and possibly have careers in health or science. The students in the class are often leaders who are active in extracurricular activities.

My Project

Imagine the thrill that the students will get as they actually extract DNA from root tips. They will be able to view their extracted and stained DNA giving them more confidence in their lab skills. From that point, they will use models to understand how DNA is replicated and used in DNA fingerprinting. These activities will make the study of DNA come alive for the students.

Our students need these lab opportunities to put them on a higher level of understanding DNA.

Who knows how a student will be impacted by these labs? Maybe someone will be inspired to find a cure for a genetic disorder.
