My Students

The race to space, the race for a cure, and the race to stay 1st in technology development. Students in Texas now need four science classes to graduate. Forensic science is the gateway from curiosity to application. Students have to be interested to think critically. My class will make science and math fun.

My students attend a public high school.

Our 9th grade campus is at one location, 10th-12th across the street, and we are still busting at the seams. My students have both parents at home, or neither. They want for nothing, or they have nothing. They live in shacks and trailers with no power or running water, or they live in mansions. I have to cast a wide net to cover everyone. There is a wide range of income levels and parent involvement. But the one thing in common for my students is a good work ethic and a desire to attend college. Not a single student comes to me without goals - they have direction and drive. Many have experienced adult situations early on in life, and it shapes them into students with maturity. There is a lot of pressure on them to do more, get involved more, to have a resume that gets them into the best college. I am honored to be able to offer a new class that will be challenging yet fun; something to get them exposed to science in a way they will enjoy.

My Project

My students need the basic forensic science materials, like lancets, forceps, a micropipette and nitrile gloves, to start taking fingerprints, gathering evidence at mock crime scenes, and test blood for typing. These resources will make more hands-on activities available. I am the only teacher in the district offering forensic science, so I have little funds. The gloves will enable us to handle chemicals and test glass, paint, fibers, and human tissue for trace evidence. The lancets will allow each student to safely take their own blood and determine blood type. The fake blood I will use to make fake crime scenes will be visible with luminol. Luminol testing on objects requires precise measuring, which is where we will need a pipette. We can calculate angles and trajectory of blood patterns, determine type of weapon used, and where the victim was at time of death. We can also test the tools at the scene for blood. Human physiology is important, and the skull will be used to learn teeth placement, bone location, and focus on different skull characteristics based on gender and race. The forceps will be used to collect trace evidence, such as hairs and fibers. All of these items will be used!

This project will open the door for students who think science is boring, or all on paper, or just a class to be taken.

Donations will enable me to do more labs, to have them learn by actually doing. If this class is liked, then next year I will have more sections, and other teachers on other campuses will want to offer it, and after that ... who knows how big it could get? Maybe a second year, maybe an AP test. But we have to start somewhere.
