Minds in Motion: Students Creating Digital Portfolios

My students need a digital camera to document activities, projects, short films, and academic work in a format that can be used in the creation of digital portfolios.

My Students

How do we make school meaningful and connected to the real world outside the classroom? It is my goal to provide learning experiences outdoors and in the community. Our camera will allow my students to capture these experiences in picture and video.

My students are seventh grade boys in a public school in North Georgia.

This year we are piloting a gender based program creating a team of all boys. We have a two teacher team consisting of a math/science teacher and a language arts/social studies teacher. We use a project based learning approach and design many learning activities for the outdoors.

My Project

I specifically chose this camera because it is designed for outdoor use and is waterproof. The camera will be used by 7th grade boys who require durable equipment. Our school recently received a grant to study the local watershed. My students will be engaged in fieldwork in which they take water samples and evaluate the health of various ecosystems. The waterproof capabilities of the camera will be vital to allow students to take pictures while near and in the local rivers. Our school currently does not have this technology designed for the outdoors.

My students are creating digital portfolios in which they will showcase the learning they achieve throughout the year.

A digital camera is a vital piece of equipment needed to capture these experiences. Because much of our science curriculum is built around water, the waterproof capabilities will be invaluable.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
