My students need many picture books Such as "Opposites", "Don't Wake the Baby!" and "From Head to Toe", that are "just right" to practice and improve their reading skills and enjoyment.

My Students

Do you remember Goldilocks? She needed a chair and bed that were "just right." Research has proven that to become a successful reader students must read books that are "just right" and are interesting to the reader. My First Graders want to be excellent readers and we need some good books!

My students are amazing!

They are just starting first grade at a very economically disadvantaged school, in the poorest urban district in our country. Yet they are survivors! These students will go on to a great future, filled with opportunities that they could not have imagined in their native countries. My students are a diverse population of Arabic, Hispanic, Caucasian, and African American friends.

My Project

My students need many picture books Such as Opposites, Don't Wake the Baby! and From Head to Toe, that are "just right" to practice and improve their reading skills and enjoyment.These "just right" books are unusually funny. They were chosen to catch students' interest and show them how much fun reading can be for everyone! Giving a bear a brownie, learning about a hermit crab, Kat Kong??? Now that will make anyone laugh, and love reading. Everyday my students spend thirty minutes reading to a partner, thirty minutes reading on their own, thirty minutes reading with books on CD, thirty minutes writing, and thirty minutes working with words/spelling. To do this my students need a lot of interesting books. My students have a sense of urgency for learning to read. Do you want to help meet this urgent need? My students spend over two and a half hours a day actively engaged in developing their reading and writing skills.

That is a lot of reading and they need a lot picture books that are interesting and "just right' for their reading level. Reading is important and we don't have a lot of time, it is First Grade... so it flies! Please donate now and spread the word. I have a very excited group of First Graders who are "just right" for becoming great readers.
