Frescoes, Pharaohs, Temples and Tombs

My students need basic sculpture building, painting, masking tape, gesso, hieroglyphic alphabet, decorating, and displaying supplies for this project.

My Students

Tell students they're going to study Art "History" and you'll hear nothing but complaints. But, tell them they're going to create the tomb of a Pharaoh--complete with a life-sized mummy--and the buzz of excitement starts! We just need some basic supplies and we'll be on our way!

I teach middle school, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade art.

We are one of three middle schools in our district, serving a wonderful mixture of students from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. While the majority of my students are main-stream, I usually have two or three students in each class who are on Individual Education Plans.

My Project

This age is very difficult for children. While some are naturally social with good communication skills, others are afraid to speak up or ask questions. With this large-scale project, students will work in groups--discovering individual strengths and weaknesses, learning problem solving and conflict resolution skills as they figure out how best to complete their projects. The plaster wrap & masking tape I've requested are for building the life-sized sarcophagus & mummy of King Tut as well as many of the "artifacts" found in his tomb. The gesso and paint will be used to paint these sculptures, pillars, and cardboard "walls" of the tomb (where we will paint our frescoes.) The glitter & acrylic jewels will make our sculptures come to life! The finished display will be set up in the Student Center. Because each group will be required to write an information card about their artifact(s), the entire student body will learn about frescoes, pharaohs, temples and tombs right along with us!

Art is so important to the creative development of our children.

Like so many of the schools in our state, our district is suffering from a difficult financial crises. My art budget has been so drastically cut this year that we can only afford the basic drawing and painting supplies. Large-scale, 3-D projects such as this that are so beneficial to the students & enhance the learning process can only be realized if funded from donors such as you. Please help!
