Raking Up the Muck During the Progressive Era

My students need seven different kinds of muckraker novels ("The Jungle" and "How the Other Half Lives") to help them understand the ideas of the Progressive Era.

My Students

Theodore Roosevelt labeled many journalists "Muckrakers" during the Progressive Era. I want my students to have the chance to read some of these journals and novels which changed the view of many Americans at the turn of the 20th Century.

The students that I have the privilege to teach come from all different backgrounds.

Our school is the biggest in our district and is in need of funding. We just recently went to a four day school week to help with the economic crisis that had hit our district. Our students have embraced the change and are ready to work. They love to have enrichment materials outside their textbook that will stimulate their mind. I want to push the students to love learning and to not rely on the textbook.

My Project

The seven muckraker novels will hopefully show the students how the United States has changed for the better through laws that protect the consumers. There were little laws about child labor and meat inspection, many immigrants lived in homes and tenements that were too small for the amount of people who were living in them. Also using the novels will show how the Big Businesses had control of the government through trusts. I plan on using an activity called a jigsaw, which means that I will split the class into seven different groups. Each group will read a part of the book they are assigned. They will then discuss what their book is about and why it would make a difference during the Progressive Era. Once the discussion is complete the students would then be split into another group, but this time they will be teaching the other group members about the book they had just read. This allows for the students to learn more about the other books without having to read every book.

This project will help the students understand how much the U.S.

has changed over the years, and we still have a way to go to be a great society. It will also show that an individual person can change the way people view a controversial topic. Though this message many of my students can see that their ideas can make a difference.
