This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the major units my Juniors will be studying is American Transcendentalism. This movement in American Literature is very difficult for students to understand. "Into the Wild" is a book about a modern American hiker who was inspired by American Transcendentalism and began his journey to Alaska.

My students are a fantastic bunch of young adults.

I have very diverse classes, with students coming from different racial backgrounds and different socio-economic statuses. Our school is great campus with a lot of school spirit, but not a lot of funds from our district for anything "extra" to supplement the curriculum. Something that is very important to them is real world examples of the literature movements and information we are teaching in class because it makes the knowledge relevant to them.

My Project

These books would really help my students to understand what the American Transcendentalist Movement was all about in American Literature. It will also help us tackle some themes that are relevant to the changes that will be taking place in their lives very soon, like finding your real identity, challenging and exploring the world around you, and following your dreams, even if it means going against the norm.

This project is very important because I feel it could be one of the things in my class that really would stick with my students.

I want them to not only find enjoyment in this unit, but also get them thinking about who they are, who they want to be, and what they need to do to get there.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
