Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember Art class when you were an elementary student? Well, my students won't because they we have no Art classes in our school! Due to budget cuts, we lost an Art program and it is now up to teachers to bring Art into the classroom.
Our students are bright, enthusiastic, and extremely artistic students who come from families with low-incomes.
Expensive Art classes outside of school are not an option for most. It is such a shame that we cannot give them an Art class here at school to help their talents thrive. In Chicago, we have one of the most renowned Art schools in the world, The Art Institute, yet we have let our students down by not nurturing their artistic talents with an Art program while they are young.
My Project
I requested basic Art supplies to help complete a yearly project that we complete each fall. This exciting unit helps bring Art into our classroom and we call it "The Art of Poetry". My Eighth graders will choose a published poem, type an analysis of the poem, and then create an original work of Art that they feel reflects their poem. We will then bind their work into an anthology. Unfortunately, I have no budget for Art supplies in my school. Each classroom receives one or two packs of construction paper and maybe a small box of crayons for AN ENTIRE YEAR! Some students bring supplies-and the rest is up to me. I spend in excess of $500.00 per year and it is never enough.
This project is so important because my artistic students will have a chance to shine on this project.
Help my students create Art that will inspire others for years to come. Help me fuse poetry, deep thinking, vivid writing, and of course Art into this worthy project!
