My Students

Imagine coming home from school wearing your new blue jeans and having to explain to mom or dad why there is a giant hole in the knee. Maybe you fell and scraped your knee, which tore the jeans. In my class, it's more likely you spilled acid on your knee and we didn't have an apron for you to wear.

We are a rural school of 1250 students.

We are one of 14 high schools in the county, yet we service an area that is 1/5 of the entire county. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and socioeconomic status groups. However, when they are in the laboratory, none of that matters. They are all working towards the same goal of trying to get through a dangerous chemistry lab while protecting their clothes. For most students, the clothes that they are wearing on any given day represents the majority of their wardrobe. Laundry is done as often as possible, but when you've only got 3 or 4 pairs of pants, stains are inevitable. I hate that I expose the little bit that these kids have to possible permanent damage because we are lacking proper safety equipment to protect them.

My Project

With the addition of new safety aprons to our laboratory, students will have the confidence to be more explorative in the lab setting. They will not feel restricted by an underlying need to try and protect their clothes, because the aprons will be providing protection that they need. I will also be able to schedule more labs for them to participate in due to the decreased resistance that they offer when we currently go into the lab.

Teenagers are motivated by a few very important things.

Their clothing is one of those things. If they can quit worrying about their clothes and concentrate on the science, then maybe I can spark an interest in them to pursue science as a career.
