My Students

Do you know how to grow plants to use for food? Well, my students do not. I work with students with a high poverty rate, and being able to grow fruits and vegetables is not something many of them will get the chance to do as children. This will be a life skill they can use in the future.

My students love the outdoors.

In Florida we have a unique opportunity that many places do not have, in that we can grow food all year. One of the important things we lack is frequent rain, and this garden project will also teach about water conservation and rain storage for use in the garden.

My Project

Students will begin by growing a tabletop garden within the classroom. This will give them the background experiences needed to then build a square foot garden outside as well as rain barrels. Students will learn the correct usage of gardening tools. They will be able to identify green ways to protect and better grow their plants. We will use a variety of plants so that they will have a varied experience with gardening.

My school is a very small school where students are part of a community.

We serve students who may not otherwise find great success in the public school setting. Many students lack the life experience that helps them to understand many concepts. This project will not only impact my students this year, but hopefully their families. I hope to have a garden big enough so that one day all students in my school can have their part of the garden.
