Something's Rotten!- Composting Made Simple

My students need a composting bin for our organic garden.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you ever planted and grew your own flowers or vegetables? The awe of watching that tiny plant grow? The special education classes at our school are in the process of creating an outdoor learning area which will incorporate the science of organic gardening.

My students range in age from first graders to third graders.

We are a self-contained class with multiple disabilities. Brain research supports the integration of the five senses to enhance learning. What better way than gardening to incorporate hands-on learning!

My Project

One component of organic gardening is composting. A composter would be an ideal way to implement this component. Students will be able to identify what can be composted. They can enlist the help of grade-level peers in collecting “green matter” to compost. They will be able to observe (smelling included) changes in the matter as it decomposes. They will understand which soils best support plant life. And just think of what is kept out of the landfills!

Also, gardening in childhood often leads to a life-long hobby and possibly better eating habits as well.

Last year our school received a grant for a greenhouse. This year we are planting vegetables. We will donate 10% of our harvest to the needy of our community and the remainder will be enjoyed by our students.
