My students need 3 netbook mini computers so that they might tap into internet resources that will aid in student collaboration on projects.

My Students

What skills will students of the future need? Along with technology skills students will need to know how to collaborate with others in a workplace and over distances.The Internet vehicles that allow students to interact and share information are there,but my students lacks the resources to use them

My students are predominately from low income families(over 75% on free or reduced lunches)from a now-closed mill town and from surrounding rural areas.

While our area lacks industries and other sources of support, we do have a sense of community. Churches send people to read with the students, and parents and guardians participate in fund-raising events. Teachers put in extra effort to maintain close connections with parents and community. Our students look to the school for encouragement, care, and opportunities.

My Project

Glogster, Edublogs, Wordle, Museum Boxes, xtimelines, etc.--Great Tools for collaborative learning are out there, but in a 2 computer classroom, we can't make productive use of them in ways that are not disruptive to other learning going on in the classroom. By having 3 netbooks in addition to the 2 computers I have, I will be able to give computer access to each group of 5 students. Using Glogster, each group of students will be able to work together to make posters on various topics of study (animal groups, books read, environmental adaptations, historical persons and events, etc.) and share these posters with others. With edublog, museum boxes, and xtimeline, students will be able to work together on projects. They'll be able to work whenever time allows throughout the day or as a group at assigned times. Supplies are in short supply this year, but having the computers will allow us to create and compile information online without extra cost. Ideas can be shared through blogs.

In this project students share knowledge and ideas through blogging with one another in a private educational blog, through creating glogster posters and museum boxes reflecting personal knowledge gained through research, and through interacting using online graphic organizers and posting walls.

In addition to collaborative projects,computers can also be used with student having IEP's requiring tests to be read aloud. With wordtalk the computer can read tests to students allowing for self-pacing
