My Students

When you think of a medical worker, especially a nurse, what gender do you see? Most individuals consider the medical profession to be mostly women. I have recently started teaching a Sports Medicine/Athletic Training class to involve more male students and desperately need various supplies.

Most of my students are females looking forward to a career in the medical field.

In an attempt to boost my male students and educate them on the various medical careers available to them, I have started teaching a Sports Medicine class. The students take my class as an elective at a Career Technical School. Although my classes are electives, students really get insight into the medical careers available and learn basic medical skills through these courses. As a junior or senior student, they are afforded the opportunity to do an Internship with their choice of career path. I believe that this helps the students to know if this is really a career they are interested in pursuing post secondary. Please support us in offering the best insight we can to these future health care workers.

My Project

I have requested heart rate monitors for my students to work with. They are required to evaluate the cardiovascular endurance of their clients. This can be done manually but this allows them to see the technology available that they will likely work with in their field of work. There is more technology involved in the health care field than ever before. The availability of this technology will enrich their clinical experience.

The Sports Medicine class will increase the number of male students in the health science class.

Why is this important? Male students are considered non traditional students for health care careers. I would like to benefit the male students and educate them in nontraditional male occupations in health care.
