Land of the Pharaohs: The Red Pyramid and Ancient Egypt

My students need 40 copies of The Red Pyramid to complete an interdisciplinary project, with 31 copies for in class use and 9 extra for signing out.

My Students

My students thirst for contemporary books related to the current curriculum that encompasses mythology (Language Arts/Reading)and the history and culture of Ancient Egypt (Social Studies). Many have already read Rick Riordan's "Lightning Thief" and the other books of the series.

My students attend a semi-rural school in North Carolina.

Due to budget cuts, many of the extras, such as newer books, are not available. These students are also feeling the budget crisis at home, as many cannot afford to purchase new books for their home libraries. Most have a strong desire to learn and enjoy projects that allow them to explore the topics being discussed from sources outside of the textbook.

My Project

Each student will have access to a book, "The Red Pyramid", that they may not have seen before. They will be able to experience a piece of writing that has as the protagonists a boy and girl in their own age group, which will help them to understand that they are able to make a difference and do things they thought impossible. They will be able to study the history, culture, and mythology of Ancient Egypt through a new perspective, that of literature. Students will carry on an in-depth research project of topics that relate to the book and reality while reading the book in class. They will be able to practice being historians while examining a variety of literary devices such as voice, characterization, and perspective. Students will also present their topics to the class. The project will also incorporate Science (motion and physics) and Math (geometric computation, hexadecimal numbering) to enhance those curricula.

Students will be able to apply what they learn through this project to topics that are covered in class, which will help to solidify the learning.

Students who are provided with real-life applications of knowledge are better able to retain that information and use it at a later date more accurately with more assurance.
