Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school was accepted into a state Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) program which is not funded. In the school's program of 50 students we have no supplies to participate in a state robot competition. Please fund our project so we can compete!

I teach 30 students in grades 6-8 in a STEM elective class and over 20 more in an after school club.

The class and club students experiment with alternative energy, compete in local and state competitions, have guest speakers from STEM companies and become interested in future careers in STEM fields. This will help increase the number of future workers in these fields in New Mexico, the United States, and the world. Students of all genders and ethnicities are involved, with 34% of the students being female and over 50% of students being minority ethnicities. These students love to learn and the STEM class or club is their favorite part of the day. This is our second year with the club at our school, with last year's activities funded by school activities funds which have been cut. Please help us!

My Project

We are requesting 2 robot building kits, 4 programmable constructed robots, 6 books on robot uses, rechargeable AA batteries to power the robots, and a movie on how robots are used in space. Teams of students will program their robots and compete in the New Mexico RoboRave statewide competition where they can win college scholarships. Students will learn the basics of computer programing, mechanical and robotics engineering, and become interested in engineering as a possible future career.

Funding for STEM classes and activities usually goes to the high school across the street.

But students need experiences in STEM in middle school to become interested early in life. Last year's students wrote, "I was able to get better grades in math and science with the club's help," "I plan to go to college now," "This has changed my life," "This year was spectacular because of this class," "I won a scholarship in a competition!" Please help the learning continue by funding this project!
