First Graders Make a Difference!

My students need books, feed, and butterfly kits that will assist them in learning about butterfly characteristics and how to maintain a butterfly garden.

My Students

Children want to make a difference in their world!

They are very involved, curious six and seven year old first graders who attend a three year old charter school in North Carolina.

Their educational facility is a public school that houses grades K-12 in three main buildings on a campus that has many natural areas.

My Project

Last year my first graders learned about animal habitats and the impact that humans make on all the environments within nature. This past spring the class planted bushes and flowers in a natural area outside of our classroom. They made bird houses/feeders/baths and on the last day of school released butterflies into this newly created habitat. During the upcoming school year my new class will expand and maintain this garden and do research to determine ways to attract butterflies and birds to our exciting space. We need materials to complete our project. It will be wonderful to have books and kits that allow us to study characteristics of different butterflies and birds.

Every day I marvel at how children desire to be involved with their environment, and I definitely want to encourage and nurture that interest.

With some books and kits I can foster their interest and expand their knowledge/experiences about how to affect change. My students are children who can make a difference!
