My Students

We encourage our teachers and students to use technology, to become 21st century learners, but our funds limit the ability to provide the resources to make this happen!

Our students are in grades 9-12 who live in a rural community.

An estimated 35% of the total school population is without Internet/computer access in the home. The older facility school, built for 800 students, is well over capacity with nearly 1200 enrolled. Teachers have access to one computer lab within the media center that is usually booked two to three weeks in advance.

My Project

Replenishing the well-used headphones in this computer lab with ones that have the capability to provide microphones will enable our students to take advantage of resources which will make them more globally competitive. The headphones currently in the lab have been used for more than six years and are often used by eight students per headset, per day. Because our lab is in a small, confined area within the media center, many programs and on-line resources that require use of sound are limited due to the number of visitors in the media center. With headphones, more students can take advantage of these programs without being disturbed by the next user. It also prevents the headphone user from disrupting other "library business. With many on-line tools now having a voice option, the microphone component is essential to making these programs successful.

Over the past three years, we've gone from 45 working headsets to approximately 15.

As a result, it is no longer possible for most classes to use programs in the media center that require sound. Students are now limited to using these resources as individuals, either before or after school, or during lunch. Replacement of these headphones is critical to meet the needs of these students as so many are auditory learners and best benefit from on-line tutorials that offer sound.
