My Students

How confusing is it when you are learning a new language that is completely different than your home language and your teacher tells you that a correct sentence begins with a capital and ends with a punctuation mark and then... you start to read poetry?

My students are struggling to learn English.

One hundred percent of them are Spanish speaking and are making huge progress in their English language proficiency, but things such as grammar, sentence structure, and different types of literature are confusing when learning a new language. My students are eager to learn and want to do well in school. I want to give them an opportunity to understand and conquer what they believe is difficult.

My Project

Our school district budget has faced some severe cuts and we cannot get materials to master and reinforce these difficult concepts. I am requesting materials that will get the students involved in reading and writing poetry. Poetry is such a difficult concept because so many rules that we teach do not apply to it. This makes it very difficult to not only read, but understand and write poetry. I am also asking for small group centers that will help me work with each group of children, that need specific instruction in using reading strategies to help them when reading non-fictional text. Paper is in short supply at our school. We do not have ANY type of writing paper and it is something we really need. This paper would offer my class a chance to write poems, stories, and narratives while illustrating their work.

Poetry and non-fictional text selections are very difficult for children to read and understand.

The resources I am asking for would be a tremendous help in teaching my students these concepts and help them feel successful and prepared to read any type of material. By supporting this project, you would be helping 30 wonderful, enthusiastic poets in training! Thank you in advance for reading about my class.
