Teaching Tolerance with Literature: Survivor Stories

My students need class sets of Eli Wiesel's "Night" and John Boyne's "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" to explore the Holocaust through different genres of literature.

My Students

Elie Wiesel once said that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Teaching my students about the Holocaust through literature is one of many steps we will take this year to ensure they never become indifferent to the world around them.

Most of my 9th graders are unaware that the Holocaust even happened.

Growing up in urban Texas, many of my students have never had the opportunity to travel outside of their neighborhood. That being said, they are voracious readers that will devour any text you put in front of them, especially a text that they can connect to. My 9th graders are the exception, not the norm at their school, where we are currently struggling to stay afloat academically. My students come into my class between 3 and 5 years behind in reading level, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying texts that can truly connect them to the rest of the world.

My Project

Because my students see violence and oppression around them everyday, they easily connect to Wiesel's narrative about at young man struggling to survive amidst the chaos of a Nazi concentration camp. This year, we are adding "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas", a piece of narrative fiction to the unit so that students will be exposed to several genres that address the same topic. Again, the themes of youth struggling to survive and the friendship that blooms in the midst of chaos are themes that instantly appeal to my students. Most importantly however, this project will expose my students to so much more than reading. They will be able discuss issues of tolerance through the lenses of history and literature. This is a project that will build culture in our classroom and inspire my students to be activists and oppose intolerance wherever they encounter it.

These two texts are an integral part of our journey as a class this year.

My ultimate goal as a 9th grade English teacher is to inspire my students to become exceptional readers and writers. More importantly however, I am striving to help them become confident, informed, and critical young men and women. Your support with this project is incredibly important to our achieving this goal.
