My students need 110 notebooks for rich and rewarding exploration of mathematics.

Mathematics is more than memorizing algorithms or practicing rote computation. Otherwise, it would not take dedication and focus, and it would not be worth doing. Mathematics is primarily about problem-solving. Only with this view can students truly receive a meaningful education.
Unfortunately, my fifth graders do not usually start the school year with a deep and personal appreciation for problem-solving in mathematics.
They enter the fifth grade at our school averaging between the 16th and 25th percentiles on the national SAT 10 exam. They think of mathematics as a set of rules that one must memorize without understanding. Justifiably, they do not enjoy the subject or think they can be good at it. Yet by focusing on mathematics as a problem-solving discipline, my students become engaged and energized. They come to appreciate that there is no shortcut to learning and that by struggling with real world problems, they can truly understand mathematics. As a result of this approach, they make tremendous academic progress. More importantly, they love mathematics and take personal ownership of their learning.
In order to provide students with as much experience with problem-solving as possible, we will be using model drawing for daily problem-solving. A personal journal for each student will serve as the essential tool for deep exploration of the material as students work to express their understanding in models and words. The journals will be both an inspiring record of student thinking as well as a reference tool.
Carter G.
Woodson said, "The mere imparting of information is not education." Daily problem-solving journals literally put education into the students' hands, giving them the tool they need to make meaning of mathematics. Instead of merely memorizing information, students can actively engage in their education.
