My Students

A two-inch screen is tough to see when there are 24 other heads in the way.

The 7th graders in our small rural town are very accustomed to sharing resources.

Their desire to learn is only overshadowed by their desire to help the community and be an active part of it. Many of these kids come from large farming families. Whether it's a farm implement or a cup of sugar, these families know to take care of each other. Their kids know that not everyone gets to have everything, and that's OK.

My Project

This modest request of 5 GPS units will help expand their horizons, quite literally, to a global scale. It is so easy to get into our own world and only think about 'us' and our small community. Teaching Geography in a new and exciting way opens a world to these students. I could 'tell' them how GPS technology works. Perhaps I could even find a video of OTHER students using GPS receivers. However, when they hold one in their hands for themselves, the light bulb flicks on. I'm passionate about Geography. I want to take the kids outside, use the units and maybe even have a little fun geocaching (high-tech treasure hunting). There's so much more to Geography than memorizing place names. This project will help me show that. We will also be sharing your gift with other classes. As we are very accustomed to sharing, these GPS receivers will be used by many more than just my students.

I never limit the hopes and dreams of these 7th graders to small town rural life. Our underfunded school budgets should not either. Please help make a difference.
