My Students

When you think of the word literacy we tend to think reading. Although reading is a part of literacy we can't forget that writing is also a crucial part. Writing is a very important skill, not only in school, but in our everyday life.

Our school is located in a very diverse area.

Our students mostly reside in government housing or small apartments that are less than accommodating for their families. They go home after school usually to an empty home where the oldest child is playing the role of mom and dad. They put themselves to bed and get themselves up for school in the morning. I have gone a whole year without even meeting some of my students parents. They have very little to no support at home and are at risk for continuing the cycle if they don't get the education they need. They enjoy coming to school because its a place of safety and comfort. Education is their only hope of doing better for themselves.

My Project

With the materials I will receive I will be able to have a balanced writing block. We will start out with shared writing activities including grammar mini lessons and then the children will be divided into the specific writing centers I requested. During this time I will be able to meet with small groups of students for guided writing instruction where I will use the pocket chart stand. By the end of the year I hope they will have developed a deep sense of what writing is and the importance of being able to write. I also hope they will see the strong connection between writing and reading.

This is the 1st year that I will have the opportunity to infuse the writing into reading.

In the past we have not been allowed to do this. During reading writing happens naturally in so many ways. I want to use that and develop them into more skilled writers within reading and outside of it.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
