My Students

I was always excited on the first day of school, maybe more than most students. The students enter and reality sinks in. They have no supplies, no clean clothing, and no stability at home. Their struggles at home overpower the classroom struggles. They are here today but are likely gone tomorrow.

Most of my students move a lot and have little or no supplies.

Their number one struggle is whether or not their parents will make the month's rent and be able to stay until the next month. Our school has one of the highest homeless rates in our county and students are transported from homeless shelters to our school. This year I have eight students, that I know of, who are considered homeless. Their home lives are very unstable and they need strong teachable moments and a safe haven where they can focus on being students.

My Project

The Reading Comprehension Games, Keeper of the Castle Game, and Tiki Challenge Game will increase students' motivation by making learning fun and inspirational while adhering to our county's curriculum maps. The materials will also help close learning gaps among students in my classroom. Using the Can Do! Reading Games, High Frequency Word Wall, and Vowel Sound Sorts, students will have daily learning experiences in our Reading Block to integrate math, language,science, and social studies. Each child will visit centers at least three times a week; this will make the most of all materials provided. Students will be able to master benchmarks in less time. Students will also be able to make connections with volunteers in my classroom to help facilitate centers. The volunteers will become mentors for the students while helping make the academic connections students need in order to be successful.

Your help will ensure that all students will have memorable learning experiences by providing the essential materials second graders need to learn the reading curriculum, using hands-on methods.

You will make it possible for my students who come with nothing to leave with everything including stability, confidence, and exciting memories!
