Turn Up the Volume!

My students need a listening center and portable CD player that will support literacy development.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Turn up the volume! 5th graders LOVE to listen to books on CD, both on their own or with a group. Our reading curriculum comes with a rich library of leveled books and audio CDs but, without a listening center, students must wait for their "turn" to listen...sometimes for days!

We are an urban charter school in Massachusetts looking to engage our students in academic excellence and character development.

Our charter is based on the values of Dr. Marin Luther King Jr, including responsibility and service. We teach all subjects with a focus on constructivism and hands-on learning. My students are in 5th grade and many come from a high-needs background.

My Project

Listening is an important element in any reading program. Not only does an audio CD make the reading experience more enjoyable, but it emphasizes rereading, comprehension, fluency, and decoding skills. Listening to books on CD is particularly vital for students who come to 5th grade with limited reading skills or for English Language Learners. For many students, 5th grade is the final opportunity for guided reading instruction, where the student works one-on-one with a teacher or in a small group, before they are expected to read independently in middle school. Rereading books on CD gives students the confidence to build their reading skills without feeling “embarrassed” in front of their peers. It also gives students greater confidence in guided reading groups, as they are able to discuss the book in more detail. For advanced students, it also provides another way to access a difficult text with unfamiliar vocabulary. Having multiple headphones allows all students this opportunity.

Your support will empower my readers to take charge of their learning and strengthen their literacy skills.

It will also allow me to further support all of my students at the reading level that is "just right" for them. 5th grade may be the last chance for some of my students to gain these necessary skills before they are expected to function independently in middle school. Your contribution will instantly make a difference in their reading experience every day in our classroom.
