Cameras for Urban Alternative High School Photography Class

My students need 3 digital cameras to provide them with a creative outlet to explore "who they are" and "how they are."

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see." ~D. Lange - Help give my students the chance to find deeper beauty in a life they view every day!

I teach at an alternative high school.

This is a choice school and one of the last steps before dropping out for students who are struggling in public education. Our school focuses on providing "at risk" students with an affective education and a diploma! Once a student has chosen my school as an alternative to their home high school, they have to complete our Discovery program. This program is built to help our students gain the skills they need to be successful throughout their high school education and in life after they graduate. Our students engage in conflict resolution training, they learn different types of problem solving skills, and through group and individual efforts, they learn how to handle their own business while also being part of a collaborative community. This program helps them see what success feels like and teaches them how to carry that success into whatever they choose to do in life.

My Project

My high school has never had a photography program before, so I am starting this program from the beginning. The three cameras I am requesting for my classroom will really benefit my students who cannot afford their own cameras. While these students are actively engaged in trying to learn about themselves as students and as people, they will be using these cameras to explore how to express their new thoughts artistically. These cameras will help give them a different perspective on life and find beauty in what they normally overlook.

As a photography teacher, I get to provide them with an opportunity to look deeper into how they define themselves and give them an outlet of expression.

Through a camera lens, my students will be exploring “who they are,” and they will also be defining “how they are.” The ultimate goal, with the help of an amazing team of teachers, is to help these students identify how they operate in life and replace any detrimental behavior with something that will help them gain confidence and success.
