Readers are Leaders- Part 1

My students need a collection of books and audio books, including "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Twilight" series titles.

My Students

Author Kylene Beers writes, "The use of audio books with struggling, reluctant, or second-language learners is powerful since they act as a scaffold that allows students to read above their actual reading level. This is critical with older students who may still read at a beginner level."

My school serves a high-poverty student population, and most of my students receive free or reduced lunches.

Many are struggling and reluctant readers who need the audio assistance to read above their very low reading levels. They have the desire to learn, but are afraid of failure. They would rather not try than to try and not succeed. This audio assistance will help to build their confidence and allay their fear. This will open the door to a life of reading. I believe and have posted in my room that, "Readers are Leaders."

My Project

I set aside 20 minutes daily for my students to read in class. I have students to reflect by writing in their readers response journal about what they have read. With sets of audio books in my classroom, my students can sit with headphones on listening and following along in class. The audio component aids in comprehension and written expression.

This project will be the catalyst that transforms my students from underachieving readers to successful life long learners.
