My Students

Algebraic reasoning is an essential skill to succeeding in middle school math and in life. My students deserve the opportunity to succeed in math and life. By providing my class with five heart rate monitors, they can apply a real world application to such an abstract topic and be successful.

This year my school is a Title I school.

We live in a beach town, and about half of my students have never even seen the ocean. 25% of my students are Hispanic, 35% African-American, 38% white, and the rest are of other races. In addition to being a beach town, we are also considered the Hollywood of the East. These children have the potential to go so far in life. They have huge hearts. In fact, they raised over $1200 for needy families in our school by doing odd jobs at home and in the neighborhood. They also brought in over 2000 canned good items to donate to the local food pantry.

My Project

The learning goal for this project is for students to discover negative, positive, and no correlations between two events. Additionally, students will learn how to read a linear equation and graph that equation. This lesson is normally taught by using two events that do not relate to students' lives, such as the number of hours spent studying for a test and the grade a student receives. This does relate to their lives, however, it does not engage or involve the students in the data. By allowing students to pick THEIR favorite songs, students will create organic situations in which to learn about direct and indirect variation. For this project, my students need five heart rate monitors to answer the questions: "Can Music Kill You?" Is there a relationship between music tempo and heart rate? Can faster music cause our heart rate to change by itself? If so, could a song with a sufficiently fast tempo cause . . . a heart attack? In this lesson, we’ll listen to music, take our pulse, and determine whether there’s a relationship and, if so, whether it’s linear.

I ALWAYS hear "when are we ever going to use this in real life?" I hate that.

I wish that I could make learning like it used to be many years ago when kids learned by DOING. Working on the farm, learning a trade, and so on. It just isn't like that anymore. It is my job to provide those experiences in the classroom. My wish for my students is that my class will help them to realize that math is important and used in everyday life.
