Algebra Show and Tell with Elmo!

My students need a document camera, such as the Elmo multimedia projector, to analyze one another's work and present completed projects.

My Students

Visualize the lines "2x + 4y = 6" and "x - 2y = 1". Can you tell whether or not they will intersect? Valuable time would be lost explaining this problem by hand using an overhead. Using a document camera it could be easily explained by students or the teacher on a graphing calculator or by hand.

I teach algebra to a precocious group of high ability students in a public middle school for gifted and talented students.

While my school is not a Title I school, we have many students who are eligible to receive free and reduced lunches. About 40% of the students are White, 40% Black, and 20% Hispanic. Although my students tend to have high IQs they still exemplify all of the playfulness and good-natured charm of pre-teen youths. Their top interests include their own budding social lives, creating a more just world, and their future careers.

My Project

Algebra involves a great deal of abstract thinking that can be difficult for students to understand and visualize. Traditionally teachers tell and explain more than we show. A document camera will greatly assist my students in preparing for their future college careers by allowing to them to see and more readily grasp mathematical concepts such as solving two step equations. Instead of simply explaining how to solve two step equations using an overhead, with a document camera I can use a manipulative or other materials to provide a more graphic example of the operations involved. More importantly, students can display and talk about their own work, such as projects and homework, in front of the class on a document camera. This is something that can not be done using an overhead unless the work is done on a transparency, which is generally not feasible due to cost constraints. Students will learn concrete connections to math and how to express their mathematical understanding.

Unless students can see and feel what they are learning, the chance that they will remember and retain the information is extremely low.

A document camera is the most modern technology available for allowing students to see and touch new ideas and concepts and it can be linked to a laptop and a Smart Board, both of which exist in the classroom already. Allowing my students the opportunity to use this needed equipment puts them in the driver seat and assures their success in Algebra and beyond.
