This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine your ideal way to learn how to play the guitar. You would probably have a good teacher who had played guitar for twenty years. You would have a group of friends. And you would most likely have a guitar. My students have all the above except the guitars! Help us realize our musical dream.

My students are 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students living in a large urban center in Illinois.

They attend a small school with a dedicated staff of professionals who believe in their mission to educate at-risk middle school students from diverse backgrounds. Our school has recently been identified as a "School to Watch" which means we have innovative curriculum that addresses the special needs of middle grade students. As a result of this innovation, we have started various clubs to create diverse opportunities to extend our students experiences and knowledge base. One of these clubs is the guitar club. Unfortunately, we need guitars for our club, as many interested students did not have the opportunity to participate, because they could not purchase their own guitar. The access to instruments is what this club needs to bring the guitar to life for my students. Please help us realize our potential and bring music to our school.

My Project

My pupils have a variety of needs. One of the most urgent, but least addressed by the traditional curriculum, is access to art. Because of poverty, my students rarely leave their neighborhood, and are unable to participate in the benefits of this urban center they live in. Therefore, it is my job to be an ambassador and a tour guide to the larger world beyond the classroom. That is why I have started a guitar club.

The learning of a musical instrument broadens my students' horizons and gives them a creative outlet that is constructive, unlike many of the outlets they face on a daily basis, such as gangs, drugs, and other hazards.

The guitar is also something they can easily learn and build on with practice. The guitar can provide them with a vehicle that strengthens their voices, realize their potentials, and gives them a creative outlet. Help us realize our musical dream with guitars. Please donate.
