My Students

Resiliency: That's Art. Photography is an art medium for those who may not be skilled at drawing or painting to use for self-expression/awareness, and more students are signing up for Photography class as an elective each year...

Approx 1000 students, small town, near large city.The students like learning about dark room photography and really enjoy learning how to create digital artwork from the pictures they take.The critical thinking and decision making that goes into creating art is a good challenge for them.

The area is depressed with many factories closed, so most students do not have money to buy their own cameras.I do not want a lack of having a camera to keep a student from having the experience of Photography, so I have a supply of cameras I have bought and have had donated by the community.There are many students who are enthusiastic about the art department and have helped raise money and get donations for the Photography classes.We only have two digital cameras, and although our administration is very supportive of the arts, funding regulations have forced an extreme cut in art supplies budgets.I am requesting camera donations because our number of students taking photography class has doubled.

My Project

I applied for and received a grant from our state arts council to have six artists internships where those artists will teach a lesson and share their artistic experiences, skills, and career information.One of those artists will be teaching a digital art lesson, and each student had been purchase his/her own camera card.The students learn darkroom photography for 7 weeks and digital photography for 7 weeks.They many then create photo art using the skills they have learned for the remaining 4 weeks of the semester.Those students who are not fortunate enough to own a camera may check one out to take home.I have yet to have a camera not be returned by a photography student.It is so exciting to see them creating artwork that they are proud of. My personal and professional goal is to create an atmosphere where students learn about the art world, art history, and about themselves. I love Picasso's quote: "Every child is an artists. The challenge is to remain an artist once he grows up."

I am willing to write grants, communicate in local newspapers, and spend a lot of my personal time to do what it takes to fulfill my goal in helping our youth.

They are our future, and we have to nurture people who have a strong self awareness and self confidence.I believe that art classes are one of the best catalysts for this nurturing. Art is the one subject that is EVERYWHERE, everywhere one looks, s/he sees an object created by an artist.Please help our artists in creating digital art...
