Mathematicians in the Making Request Supplies!

My students need a class set of math white boards and calculators.

My Students

It's the "A-ha!" moment that my students and I live for in math class every day; the moment of pride when students understand. My class works so hard to achieve that “A-ha!” moment every day because we know that a solid math foundation is necessary to be ready for college, and also in day-to-day life.

My students are a group of energetic seventh and eighth graders in a second-year Teach For America math classroom.

Although they are from low-income communities, they have set high goals and aspirations for themselves. If I ask how many students plan to attend college, every hand in the room shoots up enthusiastically. My students understand the importance of education, and so, despite the challenges at home and of adolescence, they are determined to make their dreams become a reality. My students elect to attend this charter school rather than their local district schools in hopes of attaining the best education possible. Throughout the past year I had the pleasure of watching my students begin to believe that if they worked hard enough, they could understand math. As students realized that their hard work did lead to success, their math achievement skyrocketed. My students' high aspirations and hard work inspire me to constantly seek out ways to become a better teacher.

My Project

My students loved using white boards last year during math class, and they were a great practice tool. White board practice moves quickly, allows students to get immediate feedback, and is fun! White board practice allows me to quickly scan the room to see exactly who understands, and what mistakes students are making. The difficulty with the "homemade" white boards that I made last year was that they were flimsy and only lasted for a few months. White boards would be a valuable tool in engaging students and helping them to learn math for the entire year. Furthermore, this past year we did not have enough calculators for each student. Although partner and group work is valuable, independent practice in math is crucial. If each student had his or her own calculator to use, students would be able to more easily practice math problems on their own. Students would also have more exposure to calculators and therefore feel more comfortable using them.

White boards would be a valuable tool to engage students during class, while calculators would enable students the chance to practice math independently.

Building a strong math foundation in middle school is crucial so that students enter high school on track for college. The math skills that my students are building are also essential for making educated decisions in everyday life. Your generosity would undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of my well-deserving math students.
